Strong Pitching By Gunnar Eby Leads Varsity Cavemen Over Elkhart 4-2

By GameChanger Media Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen defeated Elkhart 4-2 on Saturday at Mishawaka High School Ward Baker Park. A double by Brodey Weaver put Elkhart on the board in the top of the first. Will Hartzke grounded out, which helped Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen tie the game at one in the bottom of the second. An error gave Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the third. Weaver doubled to center field, which helped Elkhart tie the game at two in the top of the fourth. Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen captured the lead, 4-2, in the bottom of the fourth after Drew Ginter hit a sacrifice fly, and Shawn Nowacki singled down the left field line, each scoring one run. Gunnar Eby (1-0) earned the win for Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen. The hurler allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) over seven innings, striking out five and walking two. Brady Kelly took the loss for Elkhart. The hurler went three innings, giving up two runs on four hits, striking out one and walking none. Landon Johns and Braedyn Smith each collected two hits for Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen. Izaiah Bute, Hartzke, Ginter, and Nowacki each drove in one run for Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen. Weaver provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Elkhart with two runs batted in. The cleanup hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Elkhart turned one double play in the game.
