Groninger’s Big Day Propels Mishawaka Freshman Cavemen Past Goshen Freshman Redhawks

By GameChanger Media Gaeton Groninger collected four hits in four at bats, as Mishawaka Freshman Cavemen defeated Goshen Freshman Redhawks 16-4 on Saturday at Prairie View Elementary School. Gaeton Groninger tripled in the third inning, tripled in the fifth inning, singled in the sixth inning, and singled in the second inning. Mishawaka Freshman Cavemen scored nine runs in the sixth inning on the way to victory. Johnny Huemmer singled, scoring two runs, Gaeton Groninger singled, scoring one run, Evan Dodd singled, scoring one run, an error scored one run, Akeem Chester was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, and Noah Valdez doubled, scoring three runs. Mishawaka Freshman Cavemen got on the board in the top of the second inning after Dominic Fazio singled down the right field line, and Mishawaka Freshman Cavemen scored on a wild pitch, each scoring one run. Hughes grounded out, which helped Goshen Freshman Redhawks tie the game at two in the bottom of the second. A triple by Gaeton Groninger gave Mishawaka Freshman Cavemen the lead, 3-2, in the top of the third. Hodgemire was struck by a pitch, which helped Goshen Freshman Redhawks tie the game at three in the bottom of the fourth. Mishawaka Freshman Cavemen captured the lead, 7-3, in the top of the fifth after Johnny Huemmer tripled to right field, Gaeton Groninger tripled to left field, Abel Marte singled , and Akeem Chester grounded into a fielder's choice, each scoring one run. Carmello Joiner earned the win for Mishawaka Freshman Cavemen. The righty surrendered one hit and three runs over three and one-third innings, striking out three and walking five. Scales took the loss for Goshen Freshman Redhawks. The starting pitcher went five innings, surrendering 13 runs (12 earned) on 12 hits, striking out 11 and walking five. Liam Summers appeared in relief for Mishawaka Freshman Cavemen. Mishawaka Freshman Cavemen tallied 14 hits in the game. Gaeton Groninger and Dominic Fazio each collected four hits for Mishawaka Freshman Cavemen. Johnny Huemmer, Gaeton Groninger, and Noah Valdez each drove in three runs for Mishawaka Freshman Cavemen. Hughes led Goshen Freshman Redhawks with one run batted in. Kreuter went 1-for-3 at the plate to lead Goshen Freshman Redhawks in hits. Pantialeon led Goshen Freshman Redhawks with three walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating seven walks for the game. Mishawaka Freshman Cavemen will travel to Northridge Freshman Raiders for their next game on Tuesday.
