Mishawaka Cavemen Can’t Quite Erase 4-Run Deficit In Loss to Westview

The Cavemen closed the gap by scoring on a single, a hit by pitch, a single, and a single. The Cavemen were right in it until Westview walked in the seventh inning. Westview jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after Micha Miller double, scoring two runs, Mason Witer doubled, scoring one run, and Max Engle singled, scoring one run. Westview added one run in the second after Miller grounded out. A double by Gaving Engle extended the Westview lead to 6-2 in the top of the third inning. The Cavemen flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on four hits to take a 7-6 lead. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Alex Boehman that drove in two. Westview took the lead, 8-7, in the top of the seventh thanks to two walks. Engle (1-0) earned the win for Westview. The reliever allowed four hits and zero runs over two and two-thirds innings, strking out four and walking none. Landon Johns (0-1) took the loss for the Cavemen. The reliever went three innings, giving up two runs on one hit, striking out four and walking five. Trey DeBroka started on the hill for the Cavemen. The starting pitcher surrendered six hits and six runs (five earned) over four innings, striking out six and walking three. Miller opened the game for Westview. The staring pitcher surrenedered five hits and seven runs (six earned) over four and one-third innings, striking out four and walking six. The Cavemen tallied nine hits in the game. Cooper Pritchett led the Cavemen with three hits in four at bats. Boehman and Pritchett each drove in two runs for the Cavemen. Will Hartzke and Shawn Nowacki each collected multiple hits for the Cavemen. The Cavemen had patience at the plate, amassing six walks for the game. Kamdon Putz and Nowacki led the team with two free passes each. Nowacki stole two bases. Leadoff hitter Braden Kauffman led Westview with three hits in three at bats. Engle, Engle, and Miller each drove in two runs for Westview. Wire led Westview with three walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating eight walks for the game.
