Late Score Costs Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen After Late Charge From St. Joe

The game was tied at 12 in the top of the eighth when an error scored two runs. The Cavemen collected 10 hits and St. Joe had 13 in the high-scoring affair. St. Joe opened the scoring in the first after Owen Futa doubled, scoring two runs. Will Hartzke tripled, which helped the Cavemen tie the game at two in the bottom of the first. An erro gave Mishawaka the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the second. IN the top of the third inning, St. Joe went back into the lead after Brody Zielinski was struck by a pitch, and Ben Van Fleit hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring a run. The Cavemen tied the game in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a triple by Shawn Nowacki, and an error. St. Joe flipped the game on its head in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs on three hits to take a 11-5 lead. The biggest blow oin the inning was a double by Brett Mason that drove in three. The Cavemen tied the game in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an erro, a sacrifice by Tyler Thomas, a triple by Nowacki, and a triple by Trey DeBroka. A sacrifice bunt by Izaiah Bute gave the Cavemen the lead 12-11 in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh Jayce Lee lead off with a double, stole third, and scored on an error, which helped St. Joe tie the game at 12. Brady O’Connell earned the win for St. Joe. The reliever allowed three hits and one run (zero earned) over three and one-third innings, striking out two and walking two. Drew Ginter took the loss for the Cavemen. He went one inning, surrendering two runs (zero earned) on zero hits, striking out one and walking one. Brady Gallo opened the game for the Cavemen. Brady surrendered nine hits and 11 runs (six earned) over four and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking five. Tommy Eck began the game for St. Joe. The starting pitcher gave up four hits and five runs (two earned) over four innings, strking out eight and walking two. The Cavemen accumulated 10 hits in the game. Nowacki and Hartzke each collected three hits for the Cavemen. Nowacki led with three runs batted in. The infielder went 3-for5 on the day. Cooper Pritchett collected two hits in four at bats. St. Joe piled up 13 hits in the game. Mason provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led St. Joe with four runs batted in. The cleanup hitter went 4-for-5 on the day. Jayce Lee, Brady Langager, and Futa each collected multiple hits for St. Joe. Lee led the Huskies with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, amassing six walks for the game. Lee and Joe Washburn each stole multiple bases. St. Joe ran wild on the base paths, amassing five stolen bases for the game.
