The Cavemen traveled to the incredible new 70 meter pool at the massive Elkhart Health & Fitness Center for our last year competing in the Northern Indiana Conference Championship. Swimming is a unique sport in the way that the season is structured; we are three weeks away from Sectionals, our most important meet of the year, which means that we are “peaking” with training volume and intensity right as we head into the Conference Meet. As a result, we don’t usually expect to see huge time drops, because we haven’t started resting yet. That didn’t seem to matter, however, as the Cavemen Girls earned 22 PRs on the meet! Some of the highlights from the day:
The 200 Medley Relay squad of Lilly Wilson (10), Ellen Piechocki (9), Captain Mia Guerra (12) & Kat Chesson (10) scored 12th of 24, good for 10 points.
The 400 Freestyle Relay squad of Guerra, Chesson, Xochitl Soto (10) & Wilson scored 12th of 24 as well for another 10 points.
Wilson earned 13th place in the 100 Backstroke for 4 points.
All three of our divers set new PRs, and scored in the top 16!
Captain Abby Stahly (12) earned 10th place for 7 points.
Mia Woods (11) earned 12th place for 5 points.
Lily Weaver (10) earned 13th place for 4 points.
Guerra saw the Cavemen’s only podium finish and highest score of the meet, earning 8th place in the 100 Butterfly, good for 11 points.
Claire Reynolds (9) was four-for-four in PRs on the day.
Zara McCollough (10) was two-for-two in PRs.
Adrianne Verstraete (12) was two-for-two in PRs.
Courtney Brothers (12) was three-for-four in PRs.
Despite experiencing peak exhaustion at the end of the most difficult training week of the year, the Cavemen had another impressive meet. We’re on to nearly three weeks of no competitions before the big one – Sectionals (Feb 6 & 8th @ Penn) – and the most exciting part is knowing that we’ll be rested, ready to race, and representing Mishawaka with that storied Cavemen Pride when the day arrives.
See you in a few weeks!
