The Mishawaka Cavemen were back to school and back to racing on Tuesday night against the Goshen Redhawks and the Northwood Panthers – two of our future Conference opponents – in a Tri-Meet at the Goshen Aquatic Center. The start of the new semester comes with a lot of competing in a short amount of time; this marks the first of three meets this week / first of five over the next ten days, followed by the Girls’ Conference Championship next Saturday. Coming off of winter break peak training, this is one of the most difficult weeks of the season for swimmers and divers. And we performed great regardless!
The night started with celebration and high spirits, as two new Captains were named on the bus ride over. One of our team rules is that each year, a second vote for potential captains is taken at some point around half way through the season. The idea is that after a few months of training together, swimmers and divers have another opportunity to recognize peers who have emerged as leaders; it is not a guarantee that anyone will be elected. Our two new Captains, despite only being sophomores, have earned the recognition in the eyes of their teammates and coaches. Congratulations to Cole Karnes and Ethan Stanton!
Because three teams competed, the meet was scored as if it were two individual dual meets (e.g. a 2nd place overall = 2nd place against Opponent A, but 1st place against Opponent B). Top scoring Cavemen:
Lilly Wilson (10): 200 Freestyle, 2nd overall, 100 Freestyle, 1st overall
Ethan Stanton (10): 200 IM, 2nd overall, 500 Freestyle, 1st overall
Alex Kincannon (11): 200 IM, 3rd overall, 100 Butterfly, 2nd overall
Cole Karnes (10): 50 Freestyle, 2nd overall, 100 Backstroke, 2nd overall
Lucas Libbey (9): Diving, 2nd overall
Takoda Stone (11): Diving, 3rd overall
Emalease Wyant (12): 100 Butterfly, 3rd overall
Eric Arseneau (12): 100 Butterfly, 1st overall, 100 Breaststroke, 1st overall
Xochitl Soto (10): 500 Freestyle, 3rd overall
Trevor Heintzberger (11): 500 Freestyle, 3rd overall
Braxton Banks (10): 100 Breaststroke, 3rd overall
Other noteworthy races:
Senior Ryan Watt crushed his first 50 Butterfly in the 200 Medley Relay, which saw all four swimmers set PR’s in their respective splits – Davin Cockey (9) – 50 Back, Tyler Ackerley (11) – 50 Breast, and Edwin Serrano (9) – 50 Free.
Senior Emalease Wyant had a HUGE PR in her 100 Butterfly, dropping over eight seconds to out-touch her opponent one lane over.
Sophomore Kat Chesson and Freshman Elysia Morales completed their first-ever 100 Backstrokes! Likewise, Sophomore Zara McCollough completed her first-ever 100 Breaststroke!
Another great meet in the books; see you on Thursday!
