The Mishawaka Swimmers & Divers went head to head with the South Bend John Adams Eagles, in a double-dual meet that saw swimming on Tuesday night at Adams and diving on Wednesday night at Riley. Mishawaka swimmers were resilient throughout the night, winning close races across the board despite this being the first meet of the season without access to a warmup/cooldown pool between events. The first Cavemen victory of the night was earned in the Boys’ 200 Medley Relay, led off by Senior Captain Eric Arseneau’s lifetime-best 50 Backstroke, followed by Freshman Jacob Stanton, Junior Mark Crooks, and Senior Ryan Watt. The win got both Girls & Boys fired up; Sophomore Lilly Wilson took first place in the very next race, the 200 Freestyle. On the boys side, Sophomores Cole Karnes and Ethan Stanton went 2-3 in the event, both breaking the 2:00 barrier for the first time in the event. Mishawaka went on to win 3 of the next 4 events before the break; Senior Captain Mia Guerra and Senior Jeremiah Bowerman both won their 200 Individual Medleys, and Arseneau went to 2 for 2, taking a victory in the 50 Freestyle. Mishawaka went 1-2-3 in the event, with teammates Crooks and Watt getting their hands on the wall to score big for the Cavemen.
The wins kept coming after the break; Senior Captains Guerra and Arseneau both won their 100 Butterflies, Sophomore Braxton Banks won the 100 Freestyle – his first ever first place! Junior Alex Kincannon won the 500 Freestyle, Karnes took the 100 Backstroke and Ethan Stanton won the 100 Breaststroke. The boys ended up going 3 for 3 on relays, with Karnes, E. Stanton, Arseneau and Bowerman taking the 200 Free Relay, and Karnes, Kincannon, Crooks and E. Stanton taking the 400 Free Relay as well.
On Wednesday, our divers put up great numbers – made more impressive by the fact that they are preparing for the first 11-dive meet of the season – the Washington Dive Invite – this Saturday. Freshman Lucas Libbey and Junior Takoda Stone went 1-2, and Sophomore / Senior duo of Lily Weaver and Megan Byrd made their season debut.
Overall it was another impressive night for both squads, who are wrapping up finals week and heading into the crux of the season over winter break.
