In a wild high school basketball game at The Cave, Mishawaka found themselves down by 6 points with under 3 minutes to play. It seemed like every time the Cavemen would get close, Calumet would have an answer. Until the final seconds. Trailing by 3 with the clock winding under 12 seconds, Senior Trent Johnson missed a shot with a hand in his face that could’ve tied it. The rebound was taken by freshman Tommy Harringer who dove to keep the play alive. Sophomore Maddux Yohe got the ball and passed it back out front to Johnson who made the “3” to send the game to OT.
In overtime, it didn’t look good for the Cavemen. With 7.8 seconds to play, the Warriors had the ball on the side opposite of their bench. On the inbound, the Cavemen “D” swarmed the ball and forced a turnover. Senior DaVonn Parker got the loose ball with just under 4 seconds and raced to the basket for a game winning layup.
Mishawaka won 78-76 to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Cavemen play Elkhart at home Tuesday and travel to Plymouth Friday.
