Mishawaka State Champion Joe Walker and State Runner-up Jacob LaPlace were honored Tuesday night by the St. Joseph County Council and Board of Commissions.  Mishawaka Athletic Hall of Famer Dr. Deb Flemming invited Head Coach Steve Sandefer, Athletic Administrators, LaPlace and Walker.  Flemming then read the resolution that was unanimously passed.

A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE ST. JOSEPH COUNTY COUNCIL AND BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS HONORING AND CONGRATULATING THE MISHAWAKA HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLERS 

FOR WINNING A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND STATE RUNNER-UP AT THE 2020  INDIANA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

WHEREAS, St. Joseph County, Indiana, has been home to many notable coaches, athletes and teams, when Mishawaka Seniors Joseph Walker won the 182 lb State Championship and Jacob LaPlace was State Runner up at 190 lbs. at the IHSAA State Wrestling Championships on February 22, 2020 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse they added to Mishawaka’s rich history by becoming the 18th champion and 17th runner-up; and

WHEREAS, under the guidance of Head Coach – Steve Sandefer; Assistant Coaches -Fabian Chavez,  Adam Sadefur, Yancy Gradeless, and Brandon Dillenbeck; Administrators –  Superintendent Wayne Barker, Principal John Ross, Director of Athletics Dean Huppert, Assistant Athletic Directors Sherry Keyser and Julie Fisette, and Support Staff – MAtt Harmon, Anna Roberts, Michael Szerszen and Jonathon Chase;  the Mishawaka Wrestling program has shown not only the Northern Indiana Conference and St. Joseph County, but all of Indiana, how to become champions both on the mat and in the classroom; and

WHEREAS, the following student athletes –  Joe Walker and Jacob LaPlace were the two athletes from the 5 state Cavemen qualifiers to make it all the way to the finals under the lights on one of high school’s biggest stages in front of over 10,000 fans Friday night and 10,000 more fans Saturday night for the championships.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ST. JOSEPH COUNTY COUNCIL, THAT:

Section 1.  On behalf of the citizens of St. Joseph County, the St. Joseph County Council wishes to extend its sincere appreciation and gratitude to the team, coaches and parents of Mishawaka High School for winning an IHSAA State title and IHSAA State Runner-up; and for exemplifying excellence in sportsmanship throughout their representation of our County.

Section 2.  The St. Joseph County Council extends its best wishes and good fortune to each member of the Mishawaka Community for being outstanding citizens of our County and for showing the rest of Indiana how to conduct themselves with respect, dignity and class, both on and off the mat.
