Mishawaka is the NIC Champ! The Cavemen girls team won their first Northern Indiana Conference Title since 2012. Coach Chris Kowalewski’s team scored 161 points, defeating Penn with 139.5. Elkhart Central was 3rd with 61, St. Joe had 58 points to come in 4th whild Adams rounded out the top 5 with 42. Mishawaka scored in almost every event. Junior Paishence Johnson was a burner coming through with championships in the 100 meter with a 12.60. She also won the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.28 and along with Indiah Jones, Rylin Bagarus and Deijana Smith, they girls came away with the 4×100 championship.
Bagarus also had a huge night. She was the champ in the 100 high hurdles witha 15.67. She took 3rd in the 300 hurdles. And with personal best, she came through with a 17’ 3” long jump to take the NIC Title. Freshman Sarah Beshara came in 2nd in the 800 by less than a ½ second. She also got big points in the 1600 where she place 3rd. Senior Faith Quintana was huge for MHS winning the 1600 in a time of 5:14.10. She also took second in the 3200 and was part of the 4 x800 Relay team that took 2nd.
The Cavemen 4×400 Relay team was the runner up while Haley Smith took 3rd in the pole vault going 9’6”. And behind the stadium, Aujanae Miller placed 2nd in the Discus with Devyn Miller was right behind her in 3rd. Miller was also the runner up in the Shot put with Salome Walker bringing home 5th. This was a great night for Mishawaka as we won the 5th girls track conference meet in school history. It made it extra special to do it on our home track.
Up next, Sectionals next Tuesday. If the girls do well there, they would advance to the Warsaw Regionals the following Tuesday, May 21st.
