It was a huge night in the Northern Indiana Conference for the Mishawaka boys and girls track teams. The Cavemen girls team beat Penn and Clay in their first home meet in over 5 years. Meanwhile the boys knocked off Penn and Clay on the road. Mishawaka Girls Head Track Coach Chris Kowalewski said, “The big difference in the meet was how our girls finished their races. They competed all the way through the finish line and responded when it mattered. They have such love and devotion their teammates and they didn’t want to let them down when the going got tough. Coming out on top in the field events was huge. Our throwers and jumpers stepped up big. Penn normally dominates those events.”
The girls knocked off the Kingsmen for the 2nd year in-a-row. This time around it was Mishawaka 89, Penn 70 and Clay 5. Mishawaka took 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Discus event with Senior Aujanae Miller winning with a throw of 110′. Devyn Miller was 2nd (106′ 5″) while Salome Walker was 3rd (104′ 8″). Mishawaka Junior Paishence Johnson came up big in the sprints winning the 110 M (12.40) and the 200M (26.09). Meanwhile, Rachel Ibarra and Sarah Beshara finished 1 & 2 in the 800M, Faith Quintana won the 1600 M (5:13.21) and the 3200M (12:00.42), Rylin Bagarus won the 100M Hurdles (15.37) and finished 2nd in the 300M Hurdles. Mishawaka also won the 4×100 Relay (Indiah Jones, DeiJana Smith, Bagarus and Johnson), the 4 x400 Meter Relay (Ibarra, Beshara, Bri Udongo and Johnson). Undongo won the High Jump (4’6″) while Bagarus won the Long Jump (16′.00.5)
The Mishawaka boys beat Penn 82-80 while Clay had 5 points. The Cavemen were led by Deric Bailey who had wins in the 1600 M (4:41.4) and the 800 M (2:06.8). Also coming in first place were Brad Taylor in the 100 M (11.1), DaVonn Parker – 200M (23.0), Casey Quintana – 3200M (10:11.5), Blake Brown – Shot Put (49’7″) and Joe Walker in the Long Jump (21’8″). Also scoring for the Cavemen were Troy Crooks, Chris Harness, Ethan Fowler, Shane Glasco, Jarvis Delk, Emari Bullock, Tyler Rux, Devin Jimenez, Daniel Sanchez, Juciana Giannuzzi and Nick Davis. Scoring in multiple events for the boys were: Taylor, Bailey, Parker, Brown, Walker, Crooks, Fowler, Glasco and Rux.
Mishawaka Boys Head Track Coach Kyle Shaw said after the victories, “It was a fun night for our kids, the atmosphere was really neat, especially at the end. The meet came down to the shot put and both teams from Mishawaka and Penn were there to watch it play out. Blake Brown and Tyler Rux placed 1st and 3rd, with Blake winning on his final throw. We have some tough kids who are really competitive and this win should give us a lot of confidence to go forward this season.”
The boys and girls will both be home Saturday April 13th as the Cavemen host Northridge. The girls will be home again on April 13th with Riley and Washington while the boys next home meet will be a boys and girls event with Bremen and St. Joe on April 23rd.
